“Be Light unto the Law”

The story of Hannukah and the Maccabees is so deeply ingrained into the fabric of our people, that we forget sometimes that it represents more than just a time for giving presents. Fighting injustice against oppressors who sought to remove our religious and cultural identity is best remembered by a public display of light in a time of darkness. They build over 8 nights and as a family, we see a patchwork of menorahs -  old, new, school-made, candles, oils - they are representative of the variegated ethnicities and traditions that make up the beautiful quilt of Judaism.

When we are separated, Hannukah reminds us to come together.  Equally the festival compels us to remember how Jews repeatedly and continually have been subjugated by those who did not want us to express our Jewish religious identity and, on one of the rare occasions before the establishment of the state of Israel, military heroism prevailed. This story has given hope to millions that have come before us and, as we have learned, will likely provide solace for many more in years to come.

As lawyers, we can emulate the Hasmoneans and fight for those who cannot fight for themselves, but our gladiatorial tools are our briefs and our voices, which if we do not exercise will atrophy.

For those that have not yet come on board join us, the American Association of Jewish Lawyers and Jurists, and together we can be a light unto the law and pursue justice, wherever we can.
